A Variety of Belts

When determining a Karate student’s skill level, much can be learned from the color of their belt. In fact, in traditional karate, there are nine belts that can be acquired, each of which requires more time and dedication than the last. White belts, for example, are the very first belt that you receive when practicing karate. This is an indicator that you are just beginning your journey into the martial arts. However, as you progress, your belt color will also progress. Belt colors from beginner to master include white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, red, and lastly, black.

The Meaning of Karate

While many individuals may think that karate is just a word to signify the martial art in question, the truth is that karate actually possesses a far deeper meaning. When broken into two Japanese words, “kara” means “empty,” and “te” means “hand.” By combining the two phrases, we can begin to understand that karate actually means “empty hand” when translated into English. This is most likely due to the fact that karate relies on a variety of open-hand strikes such as palm-heel strikes. Not to mention, certain forms of karate also utilize a number of grappling and restraint techniques when competing against opponents.
